Known as Niliaitta, this cabin represents a contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional architectural style hailing from the neighboring Lapland region in Finland. Its primary purpose is to serve as a secure location for storing food outdoors in regions inhabited by bears and other untamed creatures. Elevated on a solitary support, this charming cabin offers an isolated setting conducive to immersing oneself in the natural world. The architects express, “Elevating ourselves from the ground instantly detaches us from the daily concerns that occur below.”
Preserving the lush landscape was of utmost importance, leading to the strategic placement of the cabin. This positioning ensured the existing trees and natural features could remain undisturbed. The singular pillar maintains minimal contact with the ground underneath, allowing the forest terrain to regain its original state post-construction.
Access to the warmly adorned wooden interior is provided by a narrow raised pathway. The interior design is unpretentious and subdued, acting as a neutral backdrop that complements the awe-inspiring surrounding scenery. Essential facilities like the bathroom, expansive shower, building utilities, and kitchenette are centralized in a core within the cabin, enabling the rest of the space to retain maximum openness.
Central to the design is the expansive window that spans the full length of the rear wall, granting unobstructed vistas of the natural panorama.
Environmental conscientiousness guided the construction of the cabin, using eco-friendly materials such as natural wood finishes and insulation made from eco-wool, while strictly avoiding the use of plastic. The exterior materials and dark tones contribute to the cabin’s seamless integration into its environment, lending it an appearance of having always harmonized with the landscape.
Given the diverse topography of the resort, devising a single type of accommodation for the entire area proved unfeasible. Niliaitta represents just one of the innovative concepts that has now been realized as a fully developed prototype.
